Treat a horse like a woman and a woman like a horse.
And they'll both win for you.

Elizabeth Arden

It's not secret that other than baseball, golf and, well, me my husband's other love and passion is thoroughbred horse racing.

I actually don't remember it starting but it is a fairly recent development, at least since we've been together. I actually have a hard time following him handicapping races from The Daily Racing Form, reviewing his strategy and placing bets. Think the stock market. There is just so much statistical evidence that goes into why a horse wins or loses. And he understands it.

I, on the other hand, pick a horse to win because their silks are pretty or I like the horse's name. I also bet on horses jockeyed by Mike Smith or owned by Maggie Moss. I guess I'm learning but it's still way over my head.

Literally every trip I've been on in the last few years have been based around a visit to the local track. My friend Ashley's husband CJ has a goal of visiting every major league baseball park in the country. Nick's goal is similar: go to every major race track.

Pacific Classic at Del Mar in San Diego

Breeder's Cup at Santa Anita in Los Angeles

Arlington Park in Chicago

Churchill Downs in Louisiville

Phew. That makes me tired.

But I do love the history of the sport, it's epic stories and wins, the passion, traditions and dedication of everyone involved.

So this all leads to tonight because we're going to the first movie we've seen in over six months. We have an insane cable package so we just never go to movies. Seriously, the last movie we saw was Hot Tub Time Machine. That proves my point.

Today, the (what I think is going to be brilliant) Secretariat opens. We'll be there and for once at a race track, I won't have to bring a book.

Let us know how it is! I want to see it and have seen lots of good reviews. My horse people have loved the early viewings.

I hope the movie is great.
Love all the photos of the two of you.
I also would choose a horse based on their name!

We saw it last night too! I LOVED it! I'm sure you both did too! What an inspiring story and a beautiful movie. Seabiscuit is another favorite movie of mine.

P.S.- I always choose the horse by their name too, or if a woman owns them! LOL! :)

Let us know how you like it! I think I mentioned this before, but I grew up on a thoroughbred race horse farm right here in St. Louis. Do you go over to Fairmount? Mark Guidrey was our jockey and I think he still jockeys over there.

Even being around it most of my life, I still don't understand all that goes into it, but I do pretty well most of the time when I bet just based on the odds, the horse's running history, jockey, and overall look of the horse before they get to the starting gate. In fact, that last one probably tells me more than all the others combined.

It sounds like a fun hobby! I would definitely pick based on name.
